Stratum V2: The Biggest Mining Pool Reform in Years. What Changes for Miners

In May 2026, seven of the largest Bitcoin mining pools representing roughly 75% of global hashrate announced adoption of the Stratum V2 protocol. This is the most significant shift in pool architecture in years. We break down what Stratum V2 is, why it matters, and how it changes conditions for everyday miners. Check your profitability in the POOL BTC calculator.

What Is Stratum V2

Stratum V1, the communication protocol between miners and pools, was created in 2012 and has barely changed since. Its core flaw: the pool fully controls which transactions go into each block. Miners just compute hashes for whatever template the pool provides.

Stratum V2 fixes this through Job Negotiation: the miner independently builds a block template with chosen transactions and submits it to the pool for approval. The pool validates proof-of-work but cannot substitute its own transaction selection.

Beyond decentralization, V2 adds:

  • Encrypted channel between ASIC and pool (prevents man-in-the-middle attacks)
  • Binary framing instead of JSON, reducing latency and bandwidth
  • Built-in device authentication
  • Multi-upstream support with latency-based failover

Who Has Already Joined

As of May 2026, pools representing approximately 680 EH/s out of the network's 905 EH/s have committed to Stratum V2:

PoolHashrate shareV2 status
Foundry USA25.6%Supported
AntPool17.1%Supported
F2Pool13.1%Supported
ViaBTC7.8%Supported
SpiderPool13.8%Supported
MARA Pool4.2%Supported
Luxor3.1%Supported

For individual miners this means: most major pools are already ready to accept Job Negotiation connections. The only question is firmware support on your ASIC.

What a Miner Needs to Switch

Stratum V2 operates at the firmware level. Stock Bitmain firmware currently supports V1 only. For V2 you need:

  • Braiins OS+ (free, open-source) -- V2 support since 2023
  • vnish and other custom firmwares with V2 flag -- check with the vendor
  • Stock Bitmain firmware for S21 XP+ series -- on the roadmap, not yet released as of July 2026

Migration steps:

  1. Install a compatible firmware (Braiins OS+ via the ASIC web interface)
  2. Set the V2 pool address in miner settings (format: stratum2+tcp://pool:port)
  3. For full Job Negotiation, enable it in config and run a local JN proxy

Without a JN proxy, the miner gets encrypted connection and authentication but the pool still builds the block template. This is already a security improvement, just not full decentralization.

Why This Matters for the Bitcoin Network

Hashrate concentration in a few pools has always been Bitcoin's structural weakness. In theory a pool with 51% hashrate could censor transactions. Historically large pools have periodically approached this threshold: GHash.IO crossed 51% in 2014, and Foundry+AntPool together held over 50% in 2023.

Stratum V2 with Job Negotiation resolves this technically: even if a pool controls 60% of hashrate, each individual miner independently selects transactions. Censorship becomes impossible without coordination across thousands of independent operators.

Practical Takeaways

  • Security now: if you connect to a pool over an untrusted network, V2 encryption prevents job substitution and reward theft.
  • Job Negotiation is optional: most miners can use V2 encryption alone with Braiins OS+, already available.
  • Payouts unchanged: FPPS/PPS payout schemes are protocol-agnostic. Pool fee stays the same.
  • Traffic obfuscation: encrypted V2 traffic is harder to identify and block at the ISP level than plain V1.

FAQ

Do I need to switch to Stratum V2 urgently?

No. V1 works reliably and payouts are unchanged. V2 adds security and eventually block template control. Switch when your ASIC firmware supports it.

Will I lose profitability when switching protocols?

No. Hashrate and payout scheme are unaffected. A brief dip under 0.1% is possible during the reconnect window.

Does V2 work with Antminer S21 stock firmware?

Not yet. Bitmain has V2 on its roadmap but no official release as of July 2026. Use Braiins OS+ or vnish for S21 series.

What is a JN proxy?

A Job Negotiation Proxy is a local server (e.g. on a Raspberry Pi or router) that builds block templates on behalf of your ASICs and submits them to the pool. Braiins provides a Docker image for this.

Will pool fees change?

No. Fees are set by your pool agreement, not by the connection protocol.
