Tangem wallet review 2026: prices, seedless backup, laser attack and who it fits

Yes, for most people who want simple cold storage for bitcoin on a phone. Tangem is an inexpensive NFC card wallet with seedless backup and independently audited chips, and it suits beginners and families. It fits less well if you want a screen on the device, updatable or open firmware, or direct delivery to Russia.

POOL BTC is an independent bitcoin mining pool comparison site. We are not Tangem and not a pool, and this is not financial advice. The facts below come from Tangem's official pages, its security audits page and help center, checked on 2026-10-04. Where the official site is silent we say so, and where a figure comes from a third party we label it.

What is the Tangem wallet?

Tangem is a hardware wallet shaped like a bank card. It has no screen, no battery and no USB port. Your phone powers the card over NFC and shows everything in the Tangem app. The company is Tangem AG, based in Zug, Switzerland, and the app runs on iOS and Android only, with no desktop version.

The current product is Tangem Wallet 2.0, sold as a set of cards since September 2023. There is also Tangem Ring, a ceramic ring in US sizes 6 to 13 that works the same way. Tangem Pay is a separate debit card product with its own KYC, and its details were not stated in our check. Tangem says it had distributed more than 6 million devices by December 2023.

Bitcoin is supported natively, along with Ethereum, Solana, XRP, BNB and others. A third-party wallet tracker counts more than 6,000 tokens across 85 networks. The app adds a built-in swap, limited staking, fiat purchases and WalletConnect.

How much does Tangem cost?

A 2-card set costs about $54.90 and a 3-card set about $69.90. Tangem's own page did not show prices in our check, so these figures come from third-party price trackers checked between March and July 2026. Shipping is free above $100 excluding VAT, and taxes are not included in the price.

ProductPrice per third-party trackers
2-card set$54.90
3-card set$69.90
Family Pack$139.80
Tangem Ring with 2 cards$140 to $160, depending on source
Leather card holder$29.90

Standard shipping costs $7.99 to $19.99 depending on the country, according to the help center. Orders ship from warehouses in Hong Kong, the USA and Slovenia. Fees for swaps and fiat purchases inside the app were not covered in our check, so look at the quote in the app before you confirm.

Tangem runs an official referral program: a buyer who orders through an invite link gets 10% off. The referrer receives 5 USDT on TRC-20 per purchase, paid in the app 30 days after delivery. Warranty terms were not stated on the official site when we checked.

Seedless or seed phrase: which setup should you choose?

Seedless is Tangem's recommended setup and the simplest one. The private key is generated inside the chip and never exists as words on paper. Your backup is the other cards in the set. The trade-off is strict: if you lose every card in the set, the funds are gone for good, with no phrase to restore them.

Wallet 2.0 offers three ways to start:

  1. Seedless: the key is generated in the chip, with no seed phrase.
  2. Generate a new 12 or 24-word BIP39 phrase, which is shown once.
  3. Import an existing 12 to 24-word BIP39 phrase.

The older Tangem 1.0 was seedless only, and its production has ended. In both modes you add one or two backup cards during setup, and you cannot add more later. With a seed phrase you also gain a way back if every card is lost, but you take on the job of storing the words safely.

Every card needs an access code of at least 4 characters. The phone can fill it in with biometrics. By default a backup card can reset a forgotten code, and you can switch that off in settings.

Who is Tangem for, and who should skip it?

Tangem fits beginners who find seed phrases stressful, families who want separate cards in one pack, and anyone who wants a cheap, durable bitcoin cold wallet that lives in a normal wallet. It also suits people who keep most of their coins on a phone already and want the keys off the phone.

It is a poor fit if you want to confirm addresses on a screen that belongs to the device, because the phone is the only display. People who insist on open-source firmware or on firmware updates should look at Trezor or similar devices. Desktop users get no app. Residents of Russia cannot order directly from Tangem.

Which countries can order Tangem?

Most countries can order directly, but not all. Tangem's help center lists Russia, Belarus, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, Vietnam, Syria, Colombia, Nicaragua, Zimbabwe, Sudan and South Sudan among countries with no direct shipping. Armenia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico are available, some with a tax ID at checkout.

In the CIS, Armenia is an example of a supported country: shipping costs $19.99 and takes 12 to 25 days. Argentina is available for $19.99 with delivery in 3 to 12 days, and you need a tax ID at checkout. Brazil, Chile and Mexico also ship with a tax ID. Colombia and Venezuela are blocked.

In Russia, cards are sold by third-party resellers. Tangem does not ship there, so check the seller carefully, and do not use any card that arrives already set up or with a printed phrase.

Is Tangem secure, and who audited it?

The card uses a Samsung S3D350A chip certified to Common Criteria EAL6+, and the card is rated IP69K against water and dust. Three independent audits are listed on Tangem's official audits page, none reporting critical vulnerabilities. The firmware is closed source and cannot be updated, which Tangem treats as a security feature.

AuditorDateScopeResult per the official audits page
Kudelski SecurityAugust 2018Card firmwareNo backdoors found
RiscureDecember 2023Firmware and hardwareNo critical vulnerabilities
Cure53March 2026Mobile appNo critical vulnerabilities

The app source code is public under a proprietary license, while the card firmware stays closed. Critics say non-updatable firmware means a flaw found later can never be fixed on cards already sold. A third party also cites a 25-year chip lifespan, which we could not confirm on the official site.

Two earlier issues are worth knowing. In December 2024, according to press reports that we could not confirm on Tangem's site, an app bug could put keys from seed phrase setups into diagnostic logs if a user sent logs to support within 7 days. Seedless setups were not affected, and the fix shipped in iOS 5.19.1 and Android 5.19.2. In September 2025, Ledger Donjon published research on bypassing the delay between access code attempts, and Tangem disputed how practical it was.

What is the July 2026 laser attack on Tangem cards?

On July 9, 2026, Ledger Donjon showed a laser fault injection attack that resets a Tangem card's access code without the old code or a backup card. It is real and was independently covered, but it needs about $250,000 of lab equipment, physical possession of the card and about two hours per card, and it visibly damages the card.

The uncomfortable part is that the attack works on all cards in circulation. Because the firmware cannot be updated, it cannot be patched. Turning off access code recovery in settings does not stop it either.

Tangem published a response the same day. It acknowledged the research and argued that no rational attacker spends $250,000 on a card whose balance they cannot know in advance. It also said there has been no real-world laser theft from any hardware wallet.

Context matters on both sides. Donjon is Ledger's security lab, and Ledger is a direct competitor of Tangem. At the same time, the finding was confirmed by independent coverage, and both sides agree the attack is real but impractical for most threat models. For an ordinary holder, the practical lesson is old advice: the attack needs your physical card, so keep the cards out of strangers' hands, store backups in different places, and do not keep a sum on one card that would justify a lab budget.

How do you start with Tangem?

Setup takes about 1 to 3 minutes, according to Tangem. You need an NFC phone and the card set. The order of steps matters, because backup cards can only be added during the first setup, so keep all cards from the set next to you before you start.

  1. Order the set. If you want the 10% referral discount from Tangem's official program, use our Tangem invite link.
  2. Install the Tangem app on an iPhone or Android phone with NFC.
  3. Tap "Get started".
  4. Scan the first card by holding it to the back of the phone.
  5. Choose seedless, or generate or import a seed phrase.
  6. Scan one or two backup cards. You cannot add them later.
  7. Set an access code of at least 4 characters.
  8. The wallet is active. Send a small amount first and check that it arrives before moving larger sums.

What are the risks of using Tangem?

The biggest risk is self-inflicted: on a seedless setup, losing every card means losing the funds permanently. Beyond that, the firmware can never be patched, it is closed source, the phone is the only display, the laser attack exists in theory, and Russia has no direct delivery.

A few points deserve more thought. With no screen on the card, you rely on your phone to show the right address, so a compromised phone is a bigger concern than with a device that has its own display. Third-party resellers add supply chain risk where Tangem does not ship. A seed phrase setup removes the "lost all cards" risk, but it adds the usual risk of someone finding the words. None of this is a view on bitcoin's price or on investing. It is about how the keys are stored.

How does Tangem compare with Ledger Nano X, Trezor Safe 3 and SafePal S1?

Tangem is the only one of the four with no screen of its own, and it uses multi-card backup instead of a mandatory seed phrase. Trezor Safe 3 is the cheapest of the devices with an OLED screen and the most open. SafePal S1 is air-gapped through QR codes. Ledger Nano X adds Bluetooth, but its price varies by source.

The choice mostly comes down to two questions: do you want a screen on the device, and do you want to manage a seed phrase. If the answers are no and no, Tangem is the simplest option here. If you decide on Tangem, the invite link gives 10% off under the official referral program.

FAQ

Is Tangem a good bitcoin wallet for beginners?

Yes, for most beginners. Setup takes a few minutes, there is no seed phrase by default, and backup is handled by extra cards. The trade-off is that the phone is the only display and losing every card on a seedless setup means losing the funds.

What happens if I lose my Tangem card?

If you still have another card from the set, you keep using the wallet with it, because the backup cards are there for exactly this case. On a seedless setup, losing all cards means permanent loss. On a seed phrase setup, you can restore the wallet from the 12 or 24 words.

Can I add a backup card later?

No. Backup cards, one or two, are added only during the first setup. This is true for both seedless and seed phrase setups, so keep the whole set with you when you activate the wallet.

Does the laser attack mean my Tangem is unsafe?

For most people, no. The attack needs your physical card, about $250,000 of lab equipment and around two hours, and it leaves visible damage. It cannot be patched, though, so keep cards secure and do not keep a sum that would justify that cost.

Can I buy Tangem in Russia?

Not directly. Tangem's help center lists Russia among countries with no direct shipping. Resellers exist, but buying from them adds supply chain risk. Armenia and Argentina are among the countries Tangem does ship to.

How do I get the 10% discount?

Tangem's official referral program gives a buyer 10% off when ordering through an invite link. You can use our link above. The referrer receives a 5 USDT reward 30 days after delivery.

This article contains a referral link: we may receive a reward if you register through it. It does not change the figures or conclusions.
