Ledger hardware wallet review 2026: models, prices, security, who it fits
Ledger is worth buying for people who want a mainstream hardware wallet with a secure element, Bitcoin Taproot and passphrase support and a wide coin list, and who live in a country where Ledger ships. Its firmware is not fully open source, and the optional Recover service divided the community. It cannot be bought from Russia, Belarus and several other countries.
POOL BTC is an independent comparison site, not Ledger and not a mining pool, and nothing here is financial advice. The figures come from Ledger's shop, support center and public statements, plus the official pages of the alternatives, all checked on 2026-10-06.
What is a Ledger hardware wallet?
A Ledger is a small device that stores your private keys inside a certified secure element chip and signs transactions without the keys ever leaving it. You manage coins with the free Ledger Wallet app, formerly called Ledger Live, on desktop and mobile. The app lists more than 500 coins natively, and thousands more work through third-party apps.
Bitcoin support is mature. The Bitcoin app handles Taproot, including key path spending and script paths, and added MuSig2 in version 2.4.0 in April 2025. Multisig works through the PSBT standard with tools such as Sparrow and Specter.
Which Ledger models exist and what do they cost?
The current lineup has five devices, from $59 for the Nano S Plus to $399 for the Stax. Prices below are in US dollars excluding VAT, from the official comparison page. The Nano Gen5 is the newest model and the Nano X is the only one with a lower certified secure element grade.
| Model | Price | Screen | Secure element | Bluetooth and NFC | Battery |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nano S Plus | $59 | Small OLED, buttons | CC EAL6+ | No and No | No |
| Nano X | $99 | Small OLED, buttons | CC EAL5+ | Yes and No | Yes |
| Nano Gen5 | $179 | 2.8 inch E Ink touch | CC EAL6+ | Yes and Yes | Yes |
| Flex | $249 | 2.8 inch E Ink touch | CC EAL6+ | Yes and Yes | Yes |
| Stax | $399 | 3.7 inch curved E Ink touch | CC EAL6+ | Yes and Yes plus Qi | Yes |
The Nano Gen5, Flex and Stax ship with a Ledger Recovery Key card, while the Nano S Plus and Nano X do not. For a first Bitcoin wallet the Nano S Plus is enough. The touch models add a bigger screen, which makes it easier to verify addresses and details.
Is Ledger secure, and what happened in 2020 and 2023?
Ledger has two documented incidents, and neither was a break of the device itself. Both involved customer data or software around the wallet, and both are worth knowing before you buy.
In July 2020 an attacker used an API key to reach the e-commerce and marketing database. The first statement spoke of about one million emails and 9,532 detailed records. In December 2020 the CEO confirmed that about 272,000 detailed records with names, addresses and phone numbers had actually been exposed, after the full dump appeared online. Payment data, passwords and funds were not affected.
On December 14, 2023 a former employee's package registry account was phished and malicious versions of the Ledger Connect Kit library were published. A wallet drainer ran in browser based apps for under two hours, and roughly $600,000 to $680,000 was drained. Ledger devices and the Ledger app were not affected, and a fix shipped within 40 minutes of discovery.
What is Ledger Recover and why was it controversial?
Ledger Recover is an optional paid backup of your recovery phrase, provided with a partner company and tied to identity verification. It costs $9.99 per month or 49.99 euros per year, with a one month free trial, and requires a passport, national ID or, in some countries, a driver's license.
When it was announced in 2023, many users argued it showed that the key could be extracted from the secure element by a firmware update. Ledger answered that it is strictly opt-in and needs explicit consent on the device. It is available in the EU, the UK, the US, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and other countries, but Russia is not included. If you never enable it, nothing changes for you, but the fact that the capability exists is a trust trade-off you should accept consciously.
Is Ledger open source?
Only partly. The Bitcoin app and the app SDK are open source, and the SDK uses the Apache 2.0 license. The operating system source can be viewed under a "Source Code Accessibility" license that allows audit and compilation for Ledger hardware, but it is not a free license. The secure element chip code is not public.
This is a real difference from Trezor and BitBox02, whose firmware is fully open source. For some buyers that matters more than any other feature. For others, the certified secure element matters more than open code.
Does Ledger ship to Russia, CIS and Latin America?
No for Russia and Belarus, yes for most of Latin America. Ledger's shipping page blocks Russia, Belarus, Crimea, the Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia regions, North Korea, Iran, Syria, Cuba, Sudan, Myanmar, and several other countries including Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Pakistan and the Philippines. Access is also restricted by IP address.
Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico are not on the blocked list, and Ledger Recover is available there with a passport. Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are not blocked, but the delivery notes warn of about two months of delay because of transit problems through Russia. Ukraine gets standard shipping only. Do not use a reseller you cannot verify, because tampered devices are the main supply chain risk.
How do you start with a Ledger safely?
The safe start is to buy only from the official shop or an authorized reseller, never from a marketplace seller or a used device, and to create the recovery phrase on the device itself.
- Order from shop.ledger.com or an authorized reseller and check that the packaging is sealed.
- Install the Ledger Wallet app from the official site.
- Connect the device and run the authenticity check in the app.
- Let the device generate a new 24 word recovery phrase and write it by hand on the recovery sheet. Never photograph or type it.
- Set a PIN of 4 to 8 digits.
- Install the Bitcoin app from inside Ledger Wallet and always verify receive addresses on the device screen.
- Optionally enable a BIP39 passphrase, up to 100 characters, entered on the device.
If you lose both the device and the phrase, nobody can recover the funds for you. You can order through this Ledger referral page, and your payment goes to the official shop.
How does Ledger compare with Trezor, Tangem and BitBox02?
Ledger has the widest coin support and mobile options, while Trezor and BitBox02 lead on open firmware and BitBox02 is hardware locked to Bitcoin. Tangem is a card with no screen. Prices below are from the official shops.
| Ledger Nano S Plus | Trezor Safe 3 | Tangem 3 card set | BitBox02 Bitcoin only | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $59 | $59 | $69.90 | $75 on the official shop |
| Secure element | EAL6+ | EAL6+ | EAL6+ | Not stated at that grade for the original |
| Firmware | Partly open | Fully open | App open, chip closed | Fully open |
| Bitcoin only mode | No | Optional | No | Yes |
| Passphrase | Yes | Yes | Optional seed phrase | Yes |
| Recovery service | Optional paid | None | Multi card backup | microSD backup |
The BitBox02 price conflicts between sources: the official shop showed $75, while a February 2026 review gave a higher figure, so confirm it on the official shop before buying. What are the risks of using Ledger?
The main risks are human ones: phishing, fake devices and a lost recovery phrase.
- Buying from an unofficial seller can give you a tampered device.
- Anyone who sees your recovery phrase controls your funds.
- Fake support messages and fake firmware pages are common.
- Shipping and delivery can fail in sanctioned or transit affected countries.
- Opt-in Recover adds identity data held by third parties.
Ledger itself does not hold your coins, but it is a company that complies with sanctions and can block purchases from your country.
FAQ
Is Ledger safe for Bitcoin?
Yes for most people, if you buy from official sources and guard the recovery phrase. The documented incidents were a customer data leak in 2020 and a software library attack in 2023, not a break of the device chip.
Which Ledger should I buy first?
The Nano S Plus at $59 is enough for Bitcoin and many coins. Pick the Flex or Stax if you want a larger touch screen and Bluetooth, and the Nano X if you want Bluetooth on a small budget.
Do I have to use Ledger Recover?
No. It is optional, paid and needs identity verification. If you never turn it on, your recovery phrase stays only with you.
Can I buy Ledger in Russia?
No. Russia is on Ledger's blocked list for shipping, and access is also limited by IP address. Latin America including Argentina is supported.
Is Ledger open source?
Partly. The Bitcoin app and SDK are open, and the operating system source is viewable under a restrictive license. Trezor and BitBox02 are fully open.
Does Ledger support a passphrase and multisig?
Yes. A BIP39 passphrase of up to 100 characters is entered on the device, and multisig works through PSBT, with MuSig2 added in April 2025.
