Avalon miners review 2026: Canaan A16, A15, hydro and home line, buying risks, warranty

Are Avalon miners worth buying in 2026? They can be for a miner with cheap power who can import hardware legally and deal with customs. On paper the A16XP, at 12.8 J/TH, beats Bitmain's S21 XP. The terms are strict, though: mandatory KYC, no refunds after payment, duties paid by the buyer and no officially supported third-party firmware.

POOL BTC is an independent comparison site. We are not Canaan, we do not sell miners or run a pool, and nothing here is investment advice. Specs, prices and terms come from the official Avalon shop, Canaan's support articles, press releases and Q2 2026 results, and the official pages of Bitmain and MicroBT, all checked on 2026-10-14. When a claim rests on a reseller or another third party, we say so. We do not estimate profit: put your own power price into the mining calculator.

What is Avalon, and who is Canaan?

Avalon is the ASIC miner brand of Canaan Inc., listed on Nasdaq as CAN since its 2019 IPO. Canaan was founded in 2013 and says it shipped the world's first batch of ASIC-based mining machines under the Avalon name that year. Its annual report for 2025 gives a principal office in Singapore.

Canaan is a Cayman Islands holding company with subsidiaries in China, Singapore and the US; older documents place its headquarters in Hangzhou. Nangeng Zhang is founder, chairman and CEO. The company also mines for itself, with 10.05 EH/s installed at the end of June 2026. It does not publish its market share against Bitmain and MicroBT, and we will not guess it.

Which Avalon models are on sale in 2026?

The official shop sells three groups: air-cooled A16 and A15 machines for farms, hydro and immersion versions of the A1566 for liquid-cooled sites, and a home line of Avalon Q, Mini 3 and Nano 3S. The most efficient model listed is the A16XP, rated at 300 TH/s and 12.8 J/TH, for $4,800.

"Not stated" means not stated on the official site (checked 2026-10-14). Prices exclude shipping and taxes and change often. The shop also lists an A15Pro+ at 240 TH/s and 15.5 J/TH, plus other hydro and immersion variants. One Avalon Q page shows "Off Sales".

The shop dates the A16 "From 2026/5" and the A16XP "From 2026Q2". Both dates have passed, and the current lead time is not stated. A16 noise and weight are not published either; for comparison, the A15Pro is rated at 75 dB max and 14.9 kg. If you see an "A1646" offered somewhere, be careful: no model by that name appears on the official shop.

Who is an Avalon miner a good fit for, and who should skip it?

Avalon fits buyers who can order straight from Canaan, pass KYC, act as importer of record and are happy on stock firmware. It suits people less if they want custom firmware tuning, need the option to cancel, or cannot confirm that delivery to their country is allowed. The home line is for hobbyists, not for building serious hashrate.

Look elsewhere if you:

  • plan to run Braiins OS, LuxOS or similar firmware, none of which officially supports Avalon;
  • buy second-hand, since the warranty covers only the original purchaser who bought directly from Canaan;
  • cannot get a clear answer on delivery to your country before paying;
  • need a refund option, because there is none after payment.

How do you buy an Avalon, and which countries are restricted?

You buy on the official shop at https://shop.canaan.io after a mandatory KYC and AML check. Canaan's order policy names only three official sites: canaan.io, canaan-creative.com and shop.canaan.io. Once you pay, you cannot cancel or get a refund. Quotes exclude VAT, duties and shipping, and the buyer is importer of record.

  1. Check the domain. Canaan warns about lookalike sites, and a convincing copy of the shop is an easy way to lose a prepayment.
  2. Pass KYC and AML verification.
  3. Pay in USD, BTC, USDT (ERC20) or ETH. PayPal works for the home line only, and a BTC price is locked at payment.
  4. Wait for shipment from Singapore, the USA or China by DHL, UPS, Qxpress or Singpost.
  5. Clear customs yourself. Canaan cannot act as your customs agent, and you pay all duties and taxes.

Before the shipment notice, Canaan may cancel or modify an order, including the model, hashrate and efficiency.

Country rules are only partly published. Buyers must not export or re-export to U.S. prohibited destinations, "such as Iran, Syria, North Korea, Crimean region, Venezuela and Cuba", or to anything under UN, EU, UK, Singapore or US sanctions. Russia is not on that list, and the shop neither bans nor permits it: not stated on the official site (checked 2026-10-14). An undated Indiegogo FAQ for the home line did list Russia among delivery countries, and reseller claims contradict each other. Argentina and the rest of Latin America are not stated either, so the general rule applies and the buyer pays duties. Canaan publishes no reseller list.

What firmware runs on Avalon, and can you install custom firmware?

Avalon machines run Canaan's stock firmware, downloaded with the manuals from the official support page. We found no officially supported third-party firmware. Braiins OS lists Antminer only, the LuxOS compatibility page covers Bitmain and MicroBT, and Braiins Toolbox can only scan, reboot and set pools on stock Avalon firmware.

We did not check the official VNish list, though one secondary source says it does not support Avalon. Community builds for the home line exist, but Canaan does not support them. In practice you get no third-party autotuning and work within the stock modes.

Setup is simple. Per the Avalon Q quick start guide, you open the miner's web page, go to Pool Config, enter up to three pool URLs with worker names and passwords, and press Submit. The device restarts. Change the default password, admin, right away.

With firmware tricks off the table, the pool fee is one of the few levers left. You can compare fees for the same machine in our mining calculator.

What does the Avalon warranty cover, and how does RMA work?

Canaan gives 360 days, but only to the original purchaser who bought directly from Canaan. The start date depends on which page you read: the shop says from pick-up from the seller, the order and repair policy says from dispatch, and a support FAQ says from the factory shipping date. Power supplies have no warranty.

For a power supply you get only a 3-day window after delivery to report a defect. The RMA process:

  1. Email avalonsupport@canaan.io with the serial number, model, logistics number and the problem.
  2. Ship the unit to Canaan's repair facility within 3 days of getting a work order, paying inbound shipping and customs.
  3. Canaan decides between repair and replacement, and pays the return after a free repair.

Exclusions include burnt hash boards or chips, improper use and pre-installed software issues. Out-of-warranty repair is paid. We found no official recalls. If a machine spends weeks in transit, a warranty counted from dispatch has lost part of its 360 days before you plug it in, so ask Canaan in writing which date applies.

What do Canaan's Q2 2026 results mean for a buyer?

Canaan's Q2 2026 was weak. Revenue for the quarter ended 2026-06-30 was US$31.9 million, against $62.7 million in Q1 2026 and $100.2 million a year earlier. Machine sales brought in $13.6 million, less than the $17.7 million Canaan earned from its own mining. Management cited softer demand for rigs and lower average selling prices.

The quarter also carried non-cash charges: a $25.3 million inventory and prepayment write-down, a $9.2 million equipment impairment and an $18.2 million crypto fair-value loss. The year-earlier comparison comes from a secondary source, Pulse 2.0. Q3 results usually come out in November.

This is context, not a forecast. For a buyer the point is plain: you prepay, with no refund, to a company whose machine sales are shrinking. On the legal side, a securities class action, Denny v. Canaan, was dismissed in 2023, and we found no consumer class action.

Can an Avalon miner heat a home or a building?

Yes, and Canaan sells both scales. The Avalon Q, Mini 3 and Nano 3S are small machines meant to run indoors. At the other end, A1566HA hydro units feed a Nordic district heating project of about 8 MW that produces water at about 80°C, which Canaan says should heat about 2,800 homes.

The customer and location of that project are not disclosed. We covered it in our piece on Canaan's Nordic heating project.

The Avalon Q needs a closer look. The spec sheet says 1674 W, but the March 2025 launch release said power adjusts from 800 to 1600 W and called it the "first professional-grade miner to support 110V worldwide". The release puts noise at 45-65 dB, and retailers quote other figures. A reseller, MineShop, reported in May 2025 that deliveries slipped after overheating turned up in late testing. That account is the reseller's, not Canaan's.

The Mini 3 is rated at 33-55 dB and 8.36 kg, and the Nano 3S at 33-40 dB and 0.86 kg. Shipping times for the home line are not stated on the official site (checked 2026-10-14). Canaan says new Avalon Home heating products are headed for mass production before winter, with specs not yet published. A home miner works like an electric heater that also mines, so the sums depend on your tariff and how much heat you need.

How does Avalon compare with Antminer S21 XP, S21 Pro and WhatsMiner M60S?

On vendor figures the A16XP is the most efficient air-cooled machine here at 12.8 J/TH, ahead of the Antminer S21 XP at 13.5 J/TH. The A16 sits between the S21 XP and the S21 Pro. The A15Pro and WhatsMiner M60S trail at 16.8 and 18.5 J/TH. On firmware choice, Bitmain wins clearly.

WhatsMiner M60S170-186 TH/s3145-3441 W (manual), 3478 W (shop)18.5 J/TH

The M60S has its own conflict: the October 2024 manual gives 3145 to 3441 W, while MicroBT's shop lists 3478 W at $1,692 and no hashrate. We did not check current Bitmain prices, so the table compares specs only.

The practical gap is software. Braiins OS supports Antminer, LuxOS supports Bitmain and MicroBT, and Avalon owners have stock firmware only. If tuning matters to you, that weighs against Canaan despite the better J/TH. More machines side by side are on our equipment page.

FAQ

Are Avalon miners good in 2026?

On paper the A16XP is competitive: 300 TH/s at 12.8 J/TH, against 13.5 J/TH for the Antminer S21 XP. The catches are in the terms: KYC, no refunds, buyer-paid duties, a warranty for direct buyers only and stock firmware only.

Where can I buy Avalon miners safely?

On the official shop, https://shop.canaan.io. Canaan names canaan.io, canaan-creative.com and shop.canaan.io as its only official sites, so check the domain before paying.

Does Canaan ship Avalon miners to Russia or Argentina?

Neither is stated on the official site (checked 2026-10-14). The sanctions clause names Iran, Syria, North Korea, Crimea, Venezuela and Cuba, plus UN, EU, UK, Singapore and US sanctions. Ask Canaan in writing before you pay.

How long is the Avalon warranty?

360 days for the original purchaser who bought from Canaan directly, with the start date given as pick-up, dispatch or factory shipping depending on the page. Power supplies have no warranty, only a 3-day defect report window.

Can I install Braiins OS or LuxOS on an Avalon?

Not officially. Braiins OS lists Antminer only, and LuxOS lists Bitmain and MicroBT. Braiins Toolbox can only scan, reboot and set pools on stock Avalon firmware.

How much power does the Avalon Q use?

The spec sheet says 1674 W for 90 TH/s, or 18.6 J/TH. The launch press release said power adjusts from 800 to 1600 W. The figures do not match, so size the circuit for the higher one.
