Hyperliquid review 2026: fees, leverage, liquidations, risks, who it fits

Hyperliquid suits experienced traders who want perpetual futures and spot on an on-chain order book, with low base fees (0.045% taker and 0.015% maker on perps at the entry tier) and a wallet or email login. It is a poor fit for beginners, because leverage reaches 40x on BTC and liquidations are fast. US residents are blocked.

POOL BTC is an independent comparison site for bitcoin mining pools and the services miners use, including exchanges where they trade or sell coins. We are not Hyperliquid, and nothing here is investment advice. The facts below come from the official Hyperliquid docs, checked on 2026-10-17. Where the docs are silent or contradict each other, we say so. Claims from secondary sources are marked as coming from third-party guides.

What is Hyperliquid?

Hyperliquid is a decentralized exchange for perpetual futures and spot trading on its own layer-1 chain. Matching and margin run on-chain in an order book called HyperCore, next to an EVM environment called HyperEVM. The docs list more than 100 perpetual assets.

The chain uses HyperBFT consensus, a variant of HotStuff. The team claims about 200,000 orders per second and a median latency of 0.2 seconds. These are the team's own numbers, and we did not test them.

For scale, DefiLlama showed about $6.88B in total value locked on 2026-10-17, third-party data rather than an official statistic. We do not quote trading volume or open interest: the figures we found conflicted between snapshots, and the official site does not state them (checked 2026-10-17). Dreamcash is one front-end for Hyperliquid listed on our own exchange page.

How much does Hyperliquid charge?

Perpetual futures start at 0.045% taker and 0.015% maker with no volume requirement, falling to 0.024% taker and 0% maker above $7B of 14-day volume. Spot starts at 0.070% taker and 0.040% maker. Staking HYPE gives a further discount of 5% to 40%.

Volume is counted over a rolling 14 days, recalculated daily at the end of the UTC day. Weighted volume is perps volume plus twice the spot volume, and subaccounts count with the master account.

14-day weighted volumePerps takerPerps maker
Tier 0 (none)0.045%0.015%
Tier 1 (over $5M)0.040%0.012%
Tier 3 (over $100M)0.030%0.004%
Tier 4 (over $500M)0.028%0.000%
Tier 6 (over $7B)0.024%0.000%

The HYPE staking discount is 5% above 10 HYPE, 10% above 100, 15% above 1,000, 20% above 10,000, 30% above 100,000 and 40% above 500,000. Accounts that supply more than 0.5% of 14-day maker volume get a rebate of 0.001%, rising to 0.003% above 3.0%.

Funding is a separate cost. It is paid hourly, capped at 4% per hour, with the interest component fixed at 0.01% per 8 hours, roughly 11.6% a year in favor of shorts. A long held for weeks pays this on top of trading fees.

Markets launched by outside builders under the HIP-3 standard add another layer. The docs conflict: the fees page says deployers may keep up to 50%, while the HIP-3 page says 0% to 300%. We found no explanation, so check the specific market before you trade it.

The bridge page sets a minimum deposit of 5 USDC, while the how-to-start page says the minimum is not specified. Third-party guides say deposits below 5 USDC are lost. A deposit is credited in under a minute and a withdrawal takes 3 to 4 minutes. The withdrawal fee is not stated officially beyond "small gas fees may apply". Third-party guides say 1 USD.

How much leverage does Hyperliquid allow, and what happens at liquidation?

BTC allows 40x up to 150M notional and 20x above that, ETH 25x up to 100M, SOL 20x up to 70M. Many mid caps allow 10x, and some only 5x. If equity falls too far, the position is liquidated into the order book or taken by a vault.

The docs contradict themselves on the range: the perpetual assets page says 3x to 40x, while the margin tiers table shows 5x as the lowest cap. Third-party sites claim up to 50x on BTC and ETH, but the official figure for BTC is 40x.

There are four margin modes: cross (the default), isolated, strict isolated and HIP-3 no-cross. Maintenance margin is half of the initial margin at maximum leverage, between 1.25% and 16.7% of position value.

Liquidation works in steps. The engine first sends market orders into the book. For positions above 100,000 USDC it closes 20% first, then waits 30 seconds. If equity drops below two thirds of maintenance margin, the position goes to the liquidator vault, part of HLP, and the trader gets no maintenance margin back.

Auto-deleveraging, or ADL, is the part many traders overlook. It triggers when an account or isolated position value turns negative. Profitable traders on the opposite side are selected by rank and closed at the previous mark price. A winning position can be closed by the system without your consent.

Who is Hyperliquid a good fit for, and who should skip it?

Hyperliquid fits experienced derivatives traders who understand margin, funding and liquidation and want low fees without handing over documents. It fits small accounts and first-time buyers poorly: 40x leverage on BTC punishes mistakes quickly, and support is a Discord ticket.

A good fit:

  • Active perps traders who place limit orders and use the 0.015% maker fee.
  • Traders who want funds in their own wallet and a wallet login.
  • Users outside the US and Ontario who have read the current Terms of Use.

A weaker fit:

  • First-time buyers who want to purchase BTC with a bank card. We saw no fiat on-ramp in the docs.
  • Anyone who plans to hold a leveraged position without watching it.
  • People who need a human reply fast. Support replies take up to 48 hours, longer on weekends, and direct messages from a "support" account are scams.

Which countries can use Hyperliquid, and is KYC required?

The official docs do not state a KYC requirement for traders, and the Terms of Use could not be read on the official site. Third-party guides say no KYC applies and that the Terms block the US, Ontario and sanctioned jurisdictions at the frontend by IP. Russia, the CIS, Brazil and Argentina are not named officially.

Russia and the CIS. Not stated on the official site (checked 2026-10-17). Do not assume access is allowed. Read the current Terms yourself.

Latin America and Argentina. Not stated on the official site (checked 2026-10-17). Third-party lists of restricted countries do not name Brazil or Argentina, but that is not a legal opinion. Local rules on derivatives and taxes remain your responsibility.

Restricted persons. Per third-party guides, section 1.5 of the Terms lists the USA, Ontario and sanctioned jurisdictions: Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Crimea, DNR and LNR. The L1 itself does not block anyone. KYC and KYB are required only to receive a bug bounty payout.

How safe is Hyperliquid, and what is its incident record?

Hyperliquid is self-custody in style: you connect an EVM wallet such as Rabby or MetaMask, or sign in by email, and enable trading with a gasless signature. Zellic audited the legacy bridge, and a bug bounty pays up to just under 1M USDC for critical bugs. Audits of the whole L1 are not listed.

The legacy Arbitrum bridge is deprecated, and Circle's CCTP is preferred. Validators need 10,000 HYPE of self-delegation locked for a year. Their number is not stated officially. Third-party sources say 21 in April 2025 and 24 with a plan for 27 in 2026, and that the Foundation held 81% of the stake in early 2025. We found no current figure.

Incidents worth knowing, all per third-party reporting:

  • JELLY, 2025-03-26. A short plus a spot price pump left the HLP vault holding the short. Validators voted to delist the token and settle at a fixed price. The Block, rekt.news and Blockworks called it a centralized decision.
  • XPL, 2025-08-27. Coordinated trades on a thin book triggered mass short liquidations. The Defiant and OKX Learn put the group's profit at about $46M to $47.7M.
  • 10 to 11 October 2025 cascade. Retellings of a co-founder post quote "100% uptime with zero bad debt" and the first cross-margin ADL in over two years. CoinShares says over $10B of positions were liquidated. The press criticized the ADL, and we found no official post-mortem.

On-chain does not mean immune from manipulation or governance decisions.

How do you start on Hyperliquid?

Open the app, connect with an email or a wallet, deposit USDC, pick a market and place an order. Wallet users deposit USDC on Arbitrum. Email users can also deposit through Ethereum, Base or Polygon. The steps follow the official onboarding page.

  1. Open app.hyperliquid.xyz and click Connect.
  2. Sign in with an email and a 6-digit code, or connect a wallet and click "Enable Trading".
  3. Deposit USDC on Arbitrum, or send to the address or QR code if you use email.
  4. Pick a token, choose Long or Short, set the size (size equals leverage times collateral) and click Place Order.
  5. Withdraw with the Withdraw button.

If you decide to register, you can open Hyperliquid through our link. Per the referrals docs, a referee gets a 4% fee discount on the first $25M of volume, not applied to vaults and subaccounts. The fees page says the rate is not specified, so confirm the discount in your own account.

Start with a small deposit, low leverage and an isolated position, and withdraw once to check the whole path.

What are the risks of using Hyperliquid?

The main risks are leverage, forced closures, thin-market manipulation, centralization and legal exposure. Leverage up to 40x means a small move can liquidate you, and ADL can close a profitable position. Leverage is dangerous, and this is not investment advice.

  • Liquidation and ADL. The liquidator vault can take a position with no refund of maintenance margin.
  • Thin markets. JELLY and XPL showed that low-liquidity markets can be pushed around and tokens delisted by vote.
  • Centralization. The validator set is small, and the Foundation's stake was large per third-party sources.
  • Audits. The docs list no full-L1 audit.
  • Legal risk. The US and Ontario are blocked. Elsewhere, compliance is on the user.
  • HIP-3 markets. Third-party deployers run them with their own oracles and liquidity.

How does Hyperliquid compare with dYdX, GMX and Binance?

On headline fees Hyperliquid is cheaper than dYdX at the entry level and close to Binance futures. GMX adds funding, borrow fees and price impact on close. Figures come from each service's official docs, and the dYdX docs point to the frontend for current numbers.

Binance has its own conflict: the support page, updated 2026-05-01, gives 0.02% and 0.05% as an example, while a Binance blog and a Square post say 0.02% and 0.04%. Max leverage on the GMX page is not stated.
