Quiet ASIC Miner for Home 2026: Best Models, Space Heater Use and Noise in dB
Short answer
Three classes fit a home: Bitaxe and clones (1 to 14 TH/s, 15 to 220 W, up to about 50 dB), Canaan's home Avalons (Nano 3S, Mini 3, Q), and space heaters with a miner inside such as Heatbit. A standard Antminer S21 (76 dBA per Bitmain, 3,500 W, 220 to 277 V at 20 A) does not belong in an apartment. Nearly every watt a miner draws becomes heat, so it heats exactly like an electric heater of the same power and will not replace central heating. Do not expect profit: this is a hobby and a lottery ticket, not income.

Caveats:
- Bitaxe power in AxeOS is an estimate, not a wall reading. One retailer measured about 17 W at the wall on a Gamma versus 15 to 19 W in firmware (bitaxe.de, 2026-01-12).
- The Noctua fan option for the Gamma is rated 14.9 dB (bitaxe.de). That is the fan, not the whole device in a room.
- Avalon Q noise figures disagree: Canaan says 45 to 65 dB, an independent measurement says 38 to 47 dB. Retailer Mineshop warns that at the top end the Q is "not ideal for apartment mining" (myminingrig).
- Avalon warranty, KYC and customs are covered in our Avalon review. Not repeated here.
Noise: what to expect
Factory miners are loud. Bitmain's S21 manual lists 76 dBA at maximum fan speed (Bitmain S21 User Guide, March 2025). Retailer Mineshop quotes 75 to 85 dB for the Antminer S19 and 75 to 80 dB for the Whatsminer M30S (Mineshop, 2025-06-11); that is seller wording, not a datasheet. Avalon A15Pro is stated at up to 75 dB (our Avalon review).
Home units are 30 dB or more quieter on paper. The dB scale is logarithmic, so that gap is large. Every 10 dB is ten times the sound power, so 30 dB less is a thousand times less.
In practice:
- A Bitaxe with a 40 mm fan is audible in a quiet room but unobtrusive (bitaxe.de). A Noctua fan or a bigger heatsink makes it quieter.
- From the GT upward the fan is audible; the retailer suggests a shelf, hallway or homelab for the 702 and NerdQaxe models.
- Avalon Nano 3S is 33 dB in quiet mode; a Gamma with Noctua is quieter, but 1.3 TH/s instead of 6 (nerdminerstore.com).
- Measure yourself and record distance, mode and background noise. Datasheet dB figures are taken in the best case.
Heating math
A miner turns nearly all the electricity it draws into heat. Of the 220 W a NerdOctaxe Hydro draws, practically all arrives in the room as heat (opensourceminers.de, 2026-10-15). So:
- 1 kW of miner heats like 1 kW of electric heater. The difference is that it computes hashes on the way.
- Cost: kW x hours x your tariff. Examples: Nano 3S at 140 W over 720 hours is 100.8 kWh per month (our arithmetic); a Gamma is about 12.4 kWh (bitaxe.de). Find your real tariff with our electricity cost guide.
- Earnings are small: that retailer estimates a Gamma earns about 51 sats per day, just under 4 cents, which does not cover its power (same source, 2026-01-12). Wirecutter's Heatbit review title says it does not pay for itself (NYT Wirecutter, 2025-02-11).
- Versus a heat pump: ENERGY STAR says an air-source heat pump can deliver up to three times more heat than the electricity it uses (energystar.gov); a miner or any resistive heater gives one. If you heat with direct electric, a miner beats a plain heater. If you have a heat pump, gas or district heat, a miner is the costlier heater.
- Compare model profitability at your tariff in our ASIC rank and calculator.
- One miner heats one room. Even the Avalon Q at full power is about 1.7 kW, an auxiliary heater for one room, not central heating (myminingrig).
- In spring the heat becomes a problem. More on seasons and experience: miners as a heat source.
Wiring and safety in an apartment
Orientation only. Ask a licensed electrician. (Figures below are for 220 V grids; the source is Russian practice.)
- Socket and line. A modern 220 V socket is rated 16 A, about 3.5 kW; older 10 A sockets about 2.2 kW (elec.ru, 2025-08-07). A standard socket group uses 2.5 mm2 copper and a 16 A breaker (same source). Limits for 120 V circuits are lower, so check the breaker rating of your own line before you plug in a 1,000 W or larger unit.
- Current: Avalon Q at 1,674 W on 220 V is about 7.6 A (1,674 / 220, our arithmetic). That fits 16 A, but do not put a kettle or heater on the same line.
- Heatbit (1,500 W) and NerdOctaxe Hydro (about 220 W) draw less.
- Factory Antminer S21 needs 220 to 277 V at 20 A, a 4,000 W supply (Bitmain). Not an apartment option.
- Avoid thin extension cords and splitters; continuous load near a socket's rating heats the contacts.
- Ventilation: leave free air on both sides; a miner covered with cloth or in a cabinet throttles or shuts down (opensourceminers.de).
- The Hydro's 12 V / 20 A supply gets warm; keep it in open air (same source).
- Put a smoke detector in the room, as with any electric heater (same source).
The hydro option
"Hydro miner for heating the house" usually means "heat my radiators". Be honest about it:
- Consumer "hydro" units like the NerdOctaxe Hydro are closed loops: water carries heat to radiators, fans blow it into room air. There is no connection to the house heating (opensourceminers.de). They are quieter than the air version: about 50 dB versus about 60 dB (Aussie Miners).
- True water-heat miners such as the Antminer S21 Hyd (335 TH/s, 5,360 W) need three-phase 380 to 415 V, a coolant loop and 8 to 10 L/min flow (Bitmain support). That is site equipment, not apartment equipment.
- We found no verified small serial "home hydro with boiler connection". Canaan only says it is preparing Avalon Home heaters for winter, specs unpublished (our Avalon review, 2026-10-14). That is the status as of 2026-10-14.
- If noise and ventilation are the problem rather than heat, compare ASIC hosting.
Lottery odds caveat
A 1 to 14 TH/s miner against a network of hundreds of EH/s is a lottery ticket for a whole block, not income. Solo miners did find at least 15 blocks in 2026, one on a Bitaxe Gamma, but that is an exception. All finds with dates, sources and odds are in solo bitcoin blocks in 2026. Pool payouts are crumbs (see the 51 sats per day above), and many pools' payout thresholds are out of reach for this hashrate; see payout thresholds. Buy for warmth, fun and learning, not profit.
FAQ
What is the quietest ASIC miner for home?
Per the seller, a Bitaxe Gamma with a Noctua fan stays under 15 dB(A), but at 1.1 to 1.3 TH/s. Among stronger units: Avalon Nano 3S at 33 to 40 dB for 6 TH/s, and the Avalon Q in eco mode at about 38 dB by an independent measurement for about 53 TH/s (sources in the table).
Can I run an Antminer S21 in an apartment?
Per Bitmain: 76 dBA, 3,500 W, 220 to 277 V at 20 A. Not by noise, not by wiring. Use hosting or a separate room.
Will a miner replace my heating?
No. It gives exactly as much heat as it draws, 15 to 220 W for Bitaxe-class units, and warms one room.
Is a miner better than a normal heater?
If you already heat with direct electricity, the heat is the same and hashes come as a side effect. If you have a heat pump, it gives up to three units of heat per unit of electricity (ENERGY STAR); a miner gives one.
How much does a home miner cost to run?
kW x 24 x your tariff. A Nano 3S at 140 W uses 3.36 kWh per day (our arithmetic); a Gamma about 0.41 kWh per day per the retailer. See electricity cost guide.
Can I make money with a Bitaxe?
Do not expect it. A retailer estimates about 51 sats per day on a Gamma, under 4 cents (bitaxe.de, 2026-01-12). It is a block lottery, see the solo article.
What is a "hydro" miner for home?
Consumer hydro units like the NerdOctaxe Hydro release heat into room air via radiators and run quieter than air-cooled; they do not connect to house heating. True S21 Hyd class hydro miners need three-phase power and are built for farms.
