Antminer S21 XP review 2026: specs, real efficiency, price, payback, who it fits

The Antminer S21 XP is worth buying only if you have cheap power, a place where 76 dBA of noise is acceptable and a reseller price near $3,000. At $0.03 per kWh it pays back in about a year. At $0.10 it barely earns its electricity. It is still one of the most efficient air-cooled SHA-256 machines you can plug into a normal 220V line.

POOL BTC is an independent comparison site. We are not Bitmain, not a reseller and not a mining pool, and nothing here is investment advice. Specs come from Bitmain's support pages and user guide, prices from public reseller listings, network figures from public trackers, all checked 2026-10-10. Where a number is missing, we say so.

What is the Antminer S21 XP?

The S21 XP is a Bitmain air-cooled bitcoin miner for the SHA-256 algorithm. It was announced on 2024-06-18 at the WDMS show in Las Vegas, and the first batch shipped in October 2024. It mines BTC, BCH and BSV, and it sits at the top of the air-cooled S21 line below the hydro and immersion variants.

Bitmain rates it at 270 TH/s with a tolerance of 3 percent, 3,645 W with a tolerance of 5 percent and 13.5 J/TH at a 25 degree inlet. It has three hashboards, four fans in a push-pull layout and a 10/100M Ethernet port. The machine weighs 18.7 kg without packaging and measures 450 by 219 by 293 mm.

What do the specs look like in practice?

The numbers that decide whether it fits your room are voltage, noise and heat. It needs 220 to 277V single-phase power on a 20A circuit, so it will not run on a 110V outlet. Noise is rated at 76 dBA at full fan speed. Heat output equals roughly three large space heaters running nonstop.

How much does it cost in 2026?

Resellers list new and refurbished units from about $2,862 to about $4,290 in early October 2026. One catalog showed $2,862 on 2026-10-09 after a 7 percent drop over 30 days. A European reseller listed new units at $2,907 in July. A used unit from Hong Kong with a 180-day service window was $4,290, and used US stock was $3,452.50.

Bitmain's own shop did not show a price without an account when we checked, so we cannot give an official figure. At launch in June 2024 the pre-order price was about $21.50 per TH/s, rising to about $30.60. Today's reseller prices are $10 to $16 per TH/s. A forum thread from 2026-09-27 mentions used units changing hands in Germany and Norway for far less than the listings above, so the secondary market is wide. Compare at least three sellers and see our September look at ASIC prices per terahash.

Does it really make money at today's network numbers?

At $82,728 per BTC, a network hashrate near 970 EH/s and 3.125 BTC of subsidy plus about 0.020 BTC of fees per block, one S21 XP earns about $10.43 a day before fees. After a 2 percent pool fee it is about $10.22. Electricity at 87.5 kWh a day then decides the outcome.

Electricity, $/kWhPower cost per dayNet per dayPayback at $2,862Payback at $4,290
0.03$2.62$7.60about 12 monthsabout 18 months
0.05$4.37$5.85about 16 monthsabout 24 months
0.07$6.12$4.10about 23 monthsabout 34 months
0.10$8.75$1.47about 64 monthsabout 96 months

The formula is your share of the network (270 TH/s divided by 970 EH/s), times 144 blocks, times the block reward. Treat the table as a snapshot. A 10 percent drop in the BTC price takes roughly $1 off the daily net in every row. Difficulty rose 4.1 percent over 30 days, and the next retarget was estimated at plus 3.64 percent. Rerun your own numbers in the POOL BTC calculator and read how payback changes with tariffs.

Can custom firmware change the result?

Yes, and it is the main lever you have after buying. Independent benchmarks of the S21 XP show that third-party firmware can lift hashrate by about 18 to 20 percent, or cut the energy per terahash by 10 to 15 percent. The price is a dev fee of 2 to 2.8 percent and a possible hit to warranty claims.

FirmwareTested resultDev fee

LuxOS, default with autotuner274.1 TH/s, 3,333 W, 12.2 J/TH2.8%

Note the conflict between rated and measured efficiency. Bitmain says 13.5 J/TH, while the tests land between 11.7 and 12.7. One benchmark also warns that efficiency drifts back toward 13 J/TH beyond about 3,600 W. Braiins OS+ is the only option in the list with native Stratum V2 support. At high power prices an underclocked profile makes sense. At low prices you push hashrate instead.

What warranty do you get?

A new unit bought from Bitmain directly carries a 365-day warranty from the shipping date, and Bitmain pays shipping for a replacement unit during that period. The warranty does not transfer when the machine is resold, and used machines are not eligible. The control board is covered for 180 days. You need a repair ticket on the service portal before you send anything back.

Unauthorized changes to the machine's functions can void the warranty. Read that line before flashing aftermarket firmware. A reseller's own guarantee is a separate document, so get it in writing.

How does it compare with close alternatives?

On efficiency the S21 XP leads the air-cooled field. The Antminer S21 Pro runs 234 TH/s at 15 J/TH, the S21+ gives 216 TH/s at 16.5 J/TH and the WhatsMiner M60S sits near 18.5 J/TH. One May 2026 comparison called anything under 15 to 16 J/TH the basic profitability threshold for this year.

Antminer S21+2163,56416.5Airabout $4,500
WhatsMiner M60S170 to 186about 3,44118.5Airabout $2,500

The WhatsMiner M66S is not a fair comparison. It is an immersion machine on three-phase power with about 5,291 W draw. If you are choosing a pool for this class of hardware, our guide to the best pool for S21 Pro and S21 Hyd applies to the S21 XP as well.

Where should you buy it, and what are the import rules?

Buy from Bitmain's own shop or from a reseller that gives you a written warranty and an invoice. The official page does not publish a public list of authorized distributors, so counterfeit and phantom sellers are a real risk. Pay by methods you can dispute where possible and never pay a stranger who found you in a chat.

For Russia, a 2025 import guide states a 0 percent customs duty, 20 percent VAT, a 30,000 RUB declaration fee and a mandatory FSB notification for devices with cryptographic functions. China also requires an export license for mining hardware, and shipments without it have been seized at the port. For Argentina and Latin America we found no sourced rules for ASIC imports, so check with a local customs broker before you pay.

Home or hosting?

At home you need an outbuilding, a dedicated 20A line and ventilation. At 76 dBA the machine is not for a living space. In hosting you pay a rate per kWh plus setup, and the facility handles noise and heat. One reseller listed hosting at $0.008 per kWh in Ethiopia and Bhutan with a $99 setup fee, which is a listing, not a promise. Our overview of hosting for 1 to 10 machines shows how rates and minimums differ.

What are the risks?

The risks are price, difficulty and time. BTC was about 34 percent lower than a year earlier at the moment of writing. Difficulty keeps rising, and the next halving, around April 2028, cuts the subsidy from 3.125 to 1.5625 BTC. A machine that pays back in 16 months must survive all of that.

Other risks: stock firmware limits tuning, aftermarket firmware costs a dev fee, and secondary-market resale prices have fallen after the 2026 margin squeeze. We found no confirmed US tariff rate specific to this model. Do not buy on borrowed money.

How do you start?

You need a dedicated line, a switch and a pool account. The steps below follow Bitmain's manual and user guide.

  1. Prepare a 220 to 277V single-phase circuit rated for 20A and a PDU rated at least 20A per outlet.
  2. Connect the included power supply with an ANTWIRE-20SP cord, which you order separately.
  3. Plug the Ethernet cable into your router or switch.
  4. Find the miner's IP with the Bitmain IP Reporter tool or a network scanner and open it in a browser.
  5. Under Miner Configuration, Pool Settings, enter the pool address as stratum+tcp://HOST:PORT.
  6. Enter the worker name in the form wallet.worker or account.worker, depending on the pool, and a password such as x.
  7. Save, wait about a minute and check that the dashboard shows hashrate near 270 TH/s.
  8. Keep power on during any firmware upgrade, because a power cut can brick the unit.

FAQ

How loud is the Antminer S21 XP?

The user guide rates it at 76 dBA at 30 degrees with fans at maximum. That is comparable to a loud power tool running all day, so keep it in a garage, a workshop or a hosting hall.

Can it run on a 110V outlet?

No. The input range is 220 to 277V AC single-phase on a 20A circuit. On 110V you would need a step-up transformer, which adds cost and losses.

Is the S21 XP still profitable in October 2026?

At $0.03 to $0.07 per kWh it earns $4 to $8 a day net at current prices, so payback runs from about a year to about two. At $0.10 it earns about $1.47 a day, which does not justify the purchase.

Does third-party firmware void the warranty?

Bitmain's guide says unauthorized changes to the machine's functions can void the warranty. Flash aftermarket firmware only after you decide the warranty matters less than the efficiency gain.

How long is the warranty?

A new unit bought from Bitmain directly has 365 days from the shipping date, and the control board has 180 days. The warranty does not move to a second owner, and used machines are not covered.

Which pool should I connect it to?

Any SHA-256 pool works, and the machine supports Stratum V1 out of the box. Compare fees and payout schemes in our pool table before you pick one.
