DEX vs CEX: What Is the Difference and Which DEXs to Choose in 2026

A CEX (centralized exchange) holds your coins and matches trades itself: you register, usually pass KYC, and get support and fiat access. A DEX (decentralized exchange) is a set of smart contracts: you trade from your own wallet and keep your keys, but you are responsible for mistakes, phishing and scam tokens. DEXs come in two kinds: spot (token swaps: Uniswap, Raydium, Jupiter, PancakeSwap) and perp DEXs (leveraged perpetual futures: Hyperliquid, Aster, dYdX, GMX). Per DefiLlama on 2026-10-21, total 24h DEX volume was about $7.59 billion (source: https://defillama.com/dexs).

POOL BTC is an independent comparison site, not an exchange or a DEX. Nothing here is investment advice. Service availability depends on your jurisdiction, and we do not give advice on evading restrictions or sanctions.

What CEX and DEX Mean

A CEX is a company that holds user assets on its own accounts, runs the order book and handles withdrawals. Examples: Bybit, OKX, Bitget, Kraken (reviews linked below).

A DEX is a set of smart contracts on a blockchain. You connect a wallet, sign a transaction, and the swap settles on-chain. Liquidity usually comes from users (AMM pools) or from an on-chain order book.

CEX vs DEX table

ParameterCEXDEX
CustodyThe exchange holds your coinsCoins stay in your wallet, you hold the keys
KYCUsually yes, depends on exchange and limitsTypically none at contract level, but a front end may block regions
FeesExchange fee (maker/taker)Protocol fee plus network gas, AMMs add slippage
LiquidityHigh on large exchanges, one order bookDepends on pool and chain, can be thin for rare tokens
Fiat on-rampOffered by mostUsually not directly, you need stablecoins or a third-party on-ramp
Main risksExchange hack or insolvency, account freezeScam tokens, phishing sites, smart contract bugs, lost seed phrase
SupportTickets and chatUsually community or Discord
ExamplesBybit, OKX, Bitget, KrakenUniswap, Raydium, PancakeSwap, Hyperliquid

It is not either-or: many people keep most funds on a proven CEX and use DEXs for tokens that are not listed on exchanges.

Spot DEX vs Perp DEX

A spot DEX swaps one token for another at the current price. Two main designs: an AMM (liquidity pool and a pricing formula, such as Uniswap, PancakeSwap, Raydium) and an aggregator that finds the best route across pools (Jupiter on Solana).

A perp DEX trades perpetual futures: a leveraged position with no expiry date and periodic funding. Pricing usually comes from an on-chain order book and oracles, and collateral is typically a stablecoin. Risk is higher: liquidations, ADL, manipulation on thin markets. For a detailed look at one of the largest perp DEXs, see our Hyperliquid review. Hyperliquid is also reachable through the third-party interface Dreamcash.

Perp DEXs are not for beginners: leverage magnifies losses and liquidations happen fast.

Major DEXs: Comparison Table

Volumes: DefiLlama snapshot of 2026-10-21. For spot DEXs the volume column is DEX Volume 24h (https://defillama.com/dexs). For perp DEXs it is Normalized Volume 24h (https://defillama.com/normalized-volume). These are different metrics and must not be added together. Fees come from each protocol's official docs.

Note on numbers: DefiLlama normalized volume adjusts perp volume, so it is not comparable with plain spot volume. Compare perp DEXs with each other and spot DEXs with each other. Data changes daily, so check the current figures on DefiLlama before deciding.

Which DEXs to Choose

This is not a "best of" ranking or a recommendation, only a pointer by task.

  • Token swaps on Ethereum and many chains: Uniswap, first by volume among spot DEXs in the DefiLlama pull of 2026-10-21.
  • BNB Chain: PancakeSwap.
  • Solana: Jupiter as a route aggregator and Raydium as one of the large AMMs on that chain.
  • Perpetual futures: Hyperliquid (largest by normalized volume in the pull), then Aster and dYdX. Experience and risk management are required.

Do not look at volume alone: check launch date, audits, hack history, fee clarity and support for your chain.

How to Start Using a DEX

  1. Wallet. Install a wallet for the chain you need (EVM chains, Solana). See the wallet comparison. Keep the seed phrase offline and never show it to anyone.
  2. Funding. Buy or transfer the coin you need to your wallet. To buy crypto with fiat, see the exchange section. Withdraw from a CEX to your own address with a small test amount first and check the transfer network.
  3. Gas. The network fee requires the chain's native coin (ETH, SOL, BNB and so on). Without it the swap will not go through. Some protocols have gasless flows (for example Jupiter sponsors gas on eligible trades), but do not count on it by default.
  4. Slippage. The gap between expected and actual price. Do not set a high value "just in case", otherwise bots may sandwich your swap.
  5. Approvals. On EVM, your first swap gives a contract the right to spend a token. Set an amount limit instead of "unlimited" and revoke old approvals from time to time.
  6. Check the site and contract. Use a saved bookmark, not a link from a chat or an ad.

DEX Risks

  • Scam tokens. Anyone can create a token and a pool. Check the contract address on the project's official site, not by name.
  • Phishing front ends. A copycat site asks for a malicious signature. Do not sign what you do not understand, especially "setApprovalForAll" and messages without a clear description.
  • Smart contract bugs and hacks. An audit is not a guarantee. Do not keep more on one protocol than you can afford to lose.
  • No refund desk. A wrong transfer or a signed malicious transaction is irreversible.
  • Perp DEXs. Liquidations, ADL, manipulation on thin markets, validator decisions (see our Hyperliquid review).
  • Jurisdiction. Some interfaces block certain countries. You must not break a service's rules or your local law, and the responsibility is yours.

Where to Buy Crypto and Compare CEXs

FAQ

What is a DEX in simple terms?

An exchange built from smart contracts where you swap tokens straight from your own wallet, without opening an account with a company. You keep your keys.

How is a CEX different from a DEX?

On a CEX a company holds your coins, KYC is usually required, and you get support and fiat. On a DEX you hold your keys, connect a wallet, pay a protocol fee and gas, and handle security yourself.

What is a perp DEX?

A decentralized venue for leveraged perpetual futures. Examples: Hyperliquid, Aster, dYdX, GMX. Riskier than spot because of liquidations.

What is Aster DEX?

A perp DEX that runs on several chains. Per its docs, maker fee is 0% and taker fee 0.04% on standard crypto pairs (varies by VIP tier). The mismatch with another docs page is noted in the table above. By normalized volume on 2026-10-21 Aster had $1.46B in the DefiLlama pull.

What is Raydium?

An AMM DEX on Solana. The default fee on new pools is 0.25%, with different ranges per pool type (see table). 24h volume per DefiLlama on 2026-10-21 was $180.92M.

Do I need KYC on a DEX?

Contracts usually do not require it, but front ends may block regions and third-party on-ramps ask for KYC. Check the terms of the specific service.

Is a DEX safer than a CEX?

Not clear-cut. There is no risk of an exchange freezing or losing your funds, but there is risk of scams, phishing and contract bugs. Safety depends on your actions.

Which DEXs are best in 2026?

There is no single best. By DefiLlama volume on 2026-10-21, Uniswap and PancakeSwap lead among spot DEXs and Hyperliquid among perp DEXs. Choose by chain, task and risk level.
